How do you remodel a kitchen on a budget?
How do you remodel a kitchen on a budget? Start with scope, not finishes. The number that matters is what you are actually building — what stays, what gets replaced, and what moves. Pick a pretty countertop first and the budget will chase you. Lock the scope first and the budget has somewhere to land.
At Home Boss Pros, led by Warren Whitaker with 25+ years of home improvement experience, a kitchen budget starts with what the room needs — not with a number pulled out of the air. A team of vetted designers, trade specialists and construction crews then builds to that scope. For the full kitchen page, see /kitchens.
Three planning ranges
These are planning ranges for North Texas kitchens of the size and finish level we typically build. They are not a quote for your house. Your real number comes after a walkthrough and a written scope.
Keep the layout and update what's there — about $30k to $45k. Cabinets refinished or replaced in place. Countertops, backsplash, fixtures, lighting and paint brought up to date in the same footprint. Sink, range and refrigerator stay where they are. This is the refresh lane — a kitchen that already works and just needs to look and feel current.
Redo more of the room — about $45k to $75k. More of the kitchen is new: cabinets, countertops, backsplash, flooring, lighting and fixtures, generally still inside the existing room and the existing utility locations. Same walls and same drain locations, more of the room replaced.
Move walls or plumbing — $75k and up. The layout itself changes. A wall comes out, the sink or range moves, electrical or plumbing gets relocated, or the cabinetry and finish detail go higher. Once the plan changes how the room is put together, you are rebuilding the kitchen — not just refreshing it.
Appliances are not included in those numbers. Treat them as their own line so the construction budget does not quietly eat them. Whether you supply them or we include them gets written into the scope either way.
If you want the deeper version of these same ranges — what pushes a kitchen from one tier to the next — read What Is a Realistic Budget for a Kitchen Remodel?. This post answers the budget question in short form. That one walks the drivers.
Scope first, then the price
A low bid that leaves half the work out is not a bargain. It is an unfinished kitchen waiting to happen. Define what stays, what is replaced, and what moves — then price that. Once the scope is clear, lock a fixed price so you know the number before demolition starts.
Cabinets are usually the biggest single driver inside a kitchen. Refinishing what you have, replacing in the same footprint, and building around a new layout are three different jobs. Kitchen Remodel Versus Kitchen Refresh Explained walks that call.
Selections belong in the scope before construction, not after the room is torn open. Countertops, tile, fixtures and lighting all carry real cost differences. Changing them mid-job changes the number.
